About the game

Is FlightOut free? Yes. Every version, on every platform.

What is it? A combat flight simulator: the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker over the whole of Kashmir at real scale, with realistic flight physics, a working cockpit, radar, missiles, the gun, and multiplayer for up to 16 pilots.

Who makes it? Yembera, a technology company from Kashmir.

Is it finished? No, it's in alpha: playable, updated often, with more to come. See Not in the game yet and the version history.

Which aircraft can I fly? The Su-27 Flanker. More aircraft are planned.

Which map? Kashmir, about 800 by 690 km, from the Punjab plains to the Karakoram, with 25 real airfields. See The world.

Platforms

Which computers does it run on? Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) and 11, macOS 11 or later on Apple silicon and 10.15 or later on Intel, and 64-bit Linux on x86-64 or ARM64. You need a graphics card with Vulkan (Windows, Linux), DirectX 12 (Windows) or Metal (Mac). See Install FlightOut.

Can I play in a browser? Yes: run.flightout.app, the FlightOut Lite version. It needs a computer with a keyboard, has simpler graphics, and is single player. See Play in your browser.

Phones and tablets? Not yet.

Controls

Can I use a joystick, a gamepad, a throttle or pedals? Not yet: FlightOut is flown with the keyboard, and the mouse is for looking around and clicking the cockpit.

Can I fly with the mouse? No, the mouse doesn't steer the jet.

Head tracking? Yes, in the desktop versions (not the browser), with OpenTrack and a webcam or a tracker. See Head tracking.

VR? Not yet.

Can I change the keys? Yes, every action, with two keys each. See Controls.

Multiplayer

How many players? Up to 16 on a server.

Is there an official server? Yes: FlightOut London, on the Multiplayer screen.

Can I host my own? Yes, from the Multiplayer screen or as a dedicated server. See Hosting a server.

Are there teams? Not yet: online it's every pilot for themselves.

Chat or voice? Not yet.

Computer pilots online? No: training traffic is offline only.

Realism

How realistic is the flight model? The Su-27 flies by real physics: forces from its wings, tail and engines, with weight that changes as fuel burns and missiles go. Its fly-by-wire, stall behaviour, engines and systems are modelled. It isn't a certified simulator, and some numbers are still being tuned: Su-27 Flanker lists what is simulated and what is simplified.

Can I start the engines myself? Not yet: there are no electrics or engine start; the engines are running when you spawn.

Are there flares and chaff? Not yet.

Are there air-to-ground weapons? Not yet: the GND mode is there, but no bombs or rockets.

The source code

Is FlightOut open source? It's source-available: you can read all the code on GitHub, report issues and contribute changes. You can't reuse the code or assets elsewhere, redistribute builds, make mods, ports or other derivative works, or use the FlightOut name. The licence is in the repository.

Can I contribute? Yes: issues and pull requests are welcome on GitHub.
