Install FlightOut

Download and install FlightOut on Windows, macOS or Linux, update it, and remove it.

On this page

Get the latest version from the download page. Every version is free.

What you need

  • A 64-bit computer with a graphics card that supports Vulkan (Windows and Linux) or Metal (macOS).
  • A little more free disk space than the download itself.
  • A keyboard. The mouse is used to look around and click in the cockpit.

The graphics presets range from Low, for modest computers, to Ultra, for powerful graphics cards. See Graphics settings.

Windows

You need Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11, 64-bit.

  1. Download FlightOut--Windows-Setup.exe.
  2. Run it. Windows may show "Windows protected your PC", because the installer is not code-signed yet. Click More info, then Run anyway.
  3. Follow the setup:
    • FlightOut installs for you only by default, with no administrator prompt. Setup also offers to install it for all users instead.
    • The Start menu always gets a FlightOut entry. A desktop icon is optional.
    • Leave Launch FlightOut now ticked on the last page to start flying straight away.

FlightOut renders with Vulkan and falls back to DirectX 12 if Vulkan is not available. If setup finds neither, it says so: updating your graphics driver usually fixes it, and you can install anyway.

macOS

You need macOS 11 or later on Apple silicon, or macOS 10.15 or later on an Intel Mac. The same app runs on both.

  1. Download FlightOut--macOS.dmg.
  2. Open it and drag FlightOut onto Applications.
  3. The first time you open it, macOS says it cannot verify the developer. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. You only do this once.

On macOS 14 or older you can also right-click FlightOut in Applications and choose Open.

Linux

You need a 64-bit Linux desktop (X11 or Wayland) with up-to-date graphics drivers, on an x86-64 or ARM64 processor.

  1. Download FlightOut--Linux-x86_64.tar.gz, or the arm64 file for ARM computers.
  2. Extract it anywhere you like. Keep the game file and FlightOut.pck together in the same folder.
  3. Start it: double-click FlightOut.x86_64 (or FlightOut.arm64), or run it from a terminal. If it will not start, make it executable first: chmod +x FlightOut.x86_64.
  4. Optional, on x86-64: run ./install.sh to add FlightOut to your applications menu (no root needed). ./install.sh --uninstall removes the menu entry again and leaves the game folder alone.

Graphics on Linux: Vulkan gives the full graphics, including the volumetric clouds. Without it the game falls back to OpenGL. On Debian or Ubuntu with AMD or Intel graphics, install Vulkan with sudo apt install mesa-vulkan-drivers. With NVIDIA, use the proprietary driver.

Updating

Install the new version over the old one. Your settings and key bindings carry over.

Online, every pilot on a server needs a version that speaks the same multiplayer language. When a release changes it, the release notes say so, and older versions can no longer join until they update.

Removing FlightOut

  • Windows: remove it from Settings, Apps. The uninstaller asks whether to also remove your settings and key bindings. The answer is No unless you choose otherwise.
  • macOS: drag FlightOut from Applications to the Bin.
  • Linux: run ./install.sh --uninstall if you added the menu entry, then delete the folder.

Where your settings are kept

All your settings and key bindings live in one file, settings.cfg, saved the moment you change anything.

SystemFolder
Windows%APPDATA%\Godot\app_userdata\Yembera FlightOut
macOS~/Library/Application Support/Godot/app_userdata/FlightOut
Linux~/.local/share/godot/app_userdata/Yembera FlightOut

Deleting the file starts FlightOut with its default settings, as on a fresh install.
