Weather and time

Set the time of day, the sky, the wind and turbulence, and what each does to your flight.

On this page

Set them in Settings, WEATHER, before a flight or during one. Changes ease in smoothly. Online, this tab is locked with a padlock and "Set by the server": everyone on the server flies in the same time and weather. Your own choices come back when you leave.

A Su-27 over the Kashmir valley at four times of day in FlightOut: dawn, sunset, dusk with the navigation lights on, and night in the cockpit
The same valley at dawn, sunset and dusk, and the cockpit at night.

The sun and moon move as they do over Kashmir. At night there are stars and moonlight, the runway and approach lights come on, and the cockpit lights (N) and flashlight (O) help you read the instruments. Time does not move while the game is paused.

Sky

SkyWhat you get
ClearAlmost no cloud
Scattered clouds (default)Fair-weather cumulus, bases about 1,100 m above the ground, tops near 3,300 m
Broken cloudsMore cumulus, bases about 1,000 m, tops near 3,600 m, a little darker
OvercastA grey deck from about 700 to 2,100 m above the valleys. Ridges and peaks rise into it and through it. Above it the sky is clear
FogLow cloud filling the valleys and plains up to about 500 m, with the mountains standing out of it. Very poor visibility below
RainA thick, dark deck from about 450 m to over 4,000 m, with rain, its sound, and heavy haze
The six sky conditions in FlightOut compared over the Kashmir valley: clear, scattered clouds, broken clouds, overcast, fog filling the valley, and rain
The six skies over the Kashmir valley. Fog is seen from above, filling the valley.

Cloud heights are measured from the ground beneath, so the clouds sit over the valley floors and plains. The clouds drift with the wind. With volumetric clouds on, they cast shadows on the ground, the trees and your jet.

WindCalm, Light (10 kt), Moderate (20 kt), Strong (30 kt)Light
Wind fromNorth, North-east, East, South-east, South, South-west, West, North-westNorth

TurbulenceOff, Light, Moderate, SevereLight

Turbulence is stronger in stronger wind and close to the ground, up to nearly twice as strong below about 800 m. Online, every pilot feels the same gusts.
